HAY PRODUCTION

Lost Prairie Ranch is considered a century farm as it is one of the last remaining, never cultivated, native hay meadows. The grasses are composed of mainly little bluestem, big bluestem, idiangrass, and long spike tridens. We have been doing our part as conservationist to improve the grass composition to convert it back to more of its traditional tall grass ecological site in the clay pan prairie. We only cut it once a year around June as this allows the  grass to have sufficient carbohydrates left to grow and reseed.
